As someone who wants to study the human consciousness I found this very interesting.

Scott Routley was a “vegetable”. A car accident seriously injured both sides of his brain, and for 12 years, he was completely unresponsive.

Unable to speak or track people with his eyes, it seemed that Routley was unaware of his surroundings, and doctors assumed he was lost in limbo. They were wrong.

In 2012, Professor Adrian Owen decided to run tests on comatose patients like Scott Routley. Curious if some “vegetables” were actually conscious, Owen put Routley in an fMRI and told him to imagine walking through his home. Suddenly, the brain scan showed activity. Routley not only heard Owen, he was responding.

Next, the two worked out a code. Owen asked a series of “yes or no” questions, and if the answer was “yes,” Routley thought about walking around his house. If the answer was “no,” Routley thought about playing tennis.

These different actions showed activity different parts of the brain. Owen started off with easy questions like, “Is the sky blue?” However, they changed medical science when Owen asked, “Are you in pain?” and Routley answered, “No.” It was the first time a comatose patient with serious brain damage had let doctors know about his condition.

While Scott Routley is still trapped in his body, he finally has a way to reach out to the people around him. This finding has huge implications.

I just saw a post about prisoners doing a labor strike and I’m going to tell you one thing and one thing only. Those that are in there on bullshit drug charges and false imprisonment, hell yeah I feel you and do what you have to do. But the motherfuckers in there for heinous crimes against humanity? Fuck y’all. All y’all. They have people who NEED to be in jail, 10 years on a murder charge and they’re out here holding their old lady’s hostage and shit? THEY need to be in there doing hard labor for shit ass pay. The motherfuckers out there sexually violating other people? THEY need to be getting treated like shit.
Disagree with me if you want, I see what goes on these streets. And they wonder why people are out here going vigilante trying to get justice. The justice system is a FAILURE. REAL SHIT.

Thank God someone finally said this. I’m so sick of stating that Western intervention and invasion of other countries fuels terrorism only for people to respond 'They did 9/11 first!'

In 1953 the UK & the US staged a coup of the democratically elected leader of Iran and installed a dictator who was more to their liking. Today the US continues to support brutal dictators (such as in Saudi Arabia) where it suits them to do so. Palestine has been occupied for decades. The list of Western imperial foreign policies over the past decades could go on and on.

9/11 was not only only a result religious extremism and it certainly was not because 'they hate our freedoms.' Terrorism is often primarily politically motivated and anyone who is serious about preventing it had better take some fucking notice of this fact.

You can’t just start the clock on 9/11 and forget 50 years of unjust oppressive Western foreign policies in the Middle East.

Abuse of undocumented women:
"Look, here’s what I can tell you. It is such a stain on the workforce of America that I just suggest that the next time you’re drinking that Chardonnay, remember who may have picked those grapes, and that lettuce, tomato you’re having with strawberry on the side, remember, because unfortunately, we’re all participants in our own consumption of the brutality in the workforce that these women confront. It’s happening. And I simply suggest, believe the women. They’re telling the truth"

Donetsk leaflet: Jews must register or face deportation →

I’m scared of what would happen after they register…

I googled it. Multiple news sources are covering this. This is actually happening. This is terrifying.

My first thought is that this would lead to something bigger. I don’t know if it would be on the scale of the Holocaust, but registering of Jews was an early part of it.

i want to reblog this 1000000000000099999 times im fucking flipping my fucking shit here

after kansas city shooting i fucking like didnt sleep and now this and i feel like fucking harry potter when theyre all like figuring out voldemorts coming back “it feels like it did before…HE’S back”

latina women are paid the least on average out of all demographics in the us and it’s scary bc they don’t even need to pay latina women on paper bc of undocumented immigration they can pay you 4.50 an hour and call it a day and there is like nothing you can do about it

and then let’s not forget ones that get tricked and not paid at all and get treated like slaves - or the ones who work all day then when it’s time to get paid they call immigration so they flee

it’s really horrible to think that this still exists and it’s not the like 1800s

Study provides new insight into how toddlers learn verbs
Parents can help toddlers’ language skills by showing them a variety of examples of different actions, according to new research from the University of Liverpool.
Previous research has shown that verbs pose particular difficulties to toddlers as they refer to actions rather than objects, and actions are often different each time a child sees them.
To find out more about this area of child language, University psychologists asked a group of toddlers to watch one of two short videos.
They then examined whether watching a cartoon star repeat the same action, compared to a character performing three different actions, affected the children’s understanding of verbs.
Developmental psychologist, Dr Katherine Twomey, said: “Knowledge of how children start to learn language is important to our understanding of how they progress throughout preschool and school years.
“This is the first study to indicate that showing toddlers similar but, importantly, not identical actions actually helped them understand what a verb refers to, instead of confusing them as you might expect.”
Dr Jessica Horst from the University of Sussex who collaborated on the research added: “It is a crucial first step in understanding how what children see affects how they learn verbs and action categories, and provides the groundwork for future studies to examine in more detail exactly what kinds of variability affect how children learn words.”

Street Harassment: Is a Man Running Over a 14-Year Old Girl for Refusing Sex Serious Enough? | Soraya Chemaly  (via mooncrumbs)

(Source: brutereason, via mexicanthighs)

In San Francisco last year, a man stabbed a woman in the face and arm after she didn’t respond positively to his sexually harassing her on the street.

In Bradenton, Fla., a man shot a high school senior to death after she and her friends refused to perform oral sex at his request.

In Chicago, a scared 15-year-old was hit by a car and died after she tried escaping from harassers on a bus.

Again, in Chicago, a man grabbed a 19-year-old walking on a public thoroughfare, pulled her onto a gangway and assaulted her.

In Savannah, Georgia, a woman was walking alone at night and three men approached her. She ignored them, but they pushed her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.

In Manhattan, a 29-year-old pregnant woman was killed when men catcalling from a van drove onto the sidewalk and hit her and her friend.

Last week, a runner in California — a woman — was stopped and asked, by a strange man in a car, if she wanted a ride. When she declined he ran her over twice.

FUCK YOU if you think that street harassment is a “compliment” or “no big deal” or that it’s “irrational” of us to be afraid because “what’s actually gonna happen.” Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you some more.
